On a rudimentary level, RTLS products are used for asset tracking and temperature monitoring, but providers today are looking to go beyond the basics and leverage RTLS products to improve care quality, increase staff workflow efficiency, and improve their bottom lines. This report looks at which RTLS vendors have proven their ability to go beyond basic use cases, which hardware solutions are accurate and scalable across entire organizations, and which solutions offer beneficial reporting and analytics.

1. CENTRAK AND VERSUS GO FURTHEST BEYOND ASSET TRACKING

Providers interviewed using CenTrak's hardware report the most RTLS use cases per customer, crediting high usability and ease of integration with nurse call systems and other systems as factors facilitating deep adoption. CenTrak users report mostly room-level and some bed-level accuracy. Versus customers report broad adoption, driven by strong integration, high usability, and effective training that helps providers leverage the system. Customers interviewed say Versus excels at accuracy, with most achieving bedlevel accuracy, which helps increase operational efficiency by saving time, decreasing asset loss, and managing patient flow.

2. AWAREPOINT AND EKAHAU CUSTOMERS CHALLENGED BY USABILITY, INTEGRATION, AND ACCURACY

Providers KLAS spoke with using Awarepoint’s legacy system‡ say difficulty integrating with nurse call and EMR solutions and a lack of vendor involvement hinder expansion of RTLS use cases. Customers also say that tracking through hallways is difficult. Ekahau customers interviewed report usability concerns and difficult integration and say that they would like more guidance from the vendor to achieve accuracy beyond the floor level in order to expand RTLS use cases.

‡ Awarepoint's new product is based on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Wi-Fi. First go-live anticipated in July 2016.

3. STANLEY HEALTHCARE, VERSUS, AND VIZZIA TECHNOLOGIES OFFER STRONG REPORTING TOOLS

vendor performance in key areas

Among those KLAS interviewed providers using STANLEY Healthcare say canned reports are comprehensive, are easy to customize, and provide actionable analytic insights that help reduce asset loss. Versus customers say the canned reports are becoming more comprehensive and are providing analytics that help increase organizational efficiency, though many would like additional training to fully optimize the reporting tools. All VIZZIA Technologies customers using the reporting tools say the solution is strong for trending and automated alerts and that the vendor is open to customization.

4. PROVIDERS STRUGGLE TO DERIVE VALUE FROM EKAHAU AND GE HEALTHCARE REPORTING

Ekahau customers interviewed say that while the reporting tools are improving, the user interface is not intuitive and the information provided by the system is not always accurate. Those using GE Healthcare say that significant gaps in the canned reports mean the insights provided are rarely actionable. Providers using reporting from Cerner, Intelligent InSites, and TeleTracking report mid- to low-tier experiences, citing usability challenges, few canned reports, and difficulty with customization.

5. PROVIDERS WANT TO EXPAND USE CASES BUT LACK REPORTING TO FULLY LEVERAGE RTLS PRODUCTS

While providers say they want to expand their use of RTLS technology, better reporting and analytics tools are needed to truly drive outcomes. Regardless of the RTLS vendor, providers would like a more robust rules engine, more actionable insights from reports to help improve efficiency, and increased usability. Additionally, many providers say they would like stronger interfaces with third-party solutions such as EMRs, billing solutions, and infrared technology as well as the ability to monitor patients and staff movement more effectively.
