Over the last five years, the Middle East and Africa healthcare IT markets have expanded and evolved. The Middle East has seen consistent energy around EHR investment and digital transformation, with 10–15 purchase decisions being made annually. Energy in Africa has fluctuated year over year, impacted by some very large regional purchase decisions. When selecting an EHR vendor partner for the digital journey, organizations almost always consider other clinical, administrative, and financial functionalities in addition to the core EHR capabilities the vendor provides. This report both provides an update on EHR vendor performance and market share and offers KLAS’ first holistic look at EHR vendors’ broader portfolios in the Middle East and Africa, specifically highlighting the adoption and performance of ancillary EHR modules.

As electronic medical record (EMR) adoption grows worldwide, healthcare organizations considering this digital transformation all have the same question: what benefits can we really expect to receive from implementing an EMR? KLAS interviewed leaders at 36 non-US healthcare organizations—12 of which are HIMSS Level 6 or 7—to learn about their journey to realizing benefits from an EMR implementation. This white paper summarizes their insights, including what clinical and operational benefits they have seen, when those benefits were realized, and what recommendations they have for peer organizations.

As healthcare organizations have come out of the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, EMR purchase decisions in Asia have ramped up. In Oceania, most public hospitals have an EMR in place, but purchase energy remains high since many public and private provider organizations are planning large-scale purchases of go-forward EMRs. This report—KLAS’ first focused exclusively on Asia and Oceania—highlights (1) market share and vendor energy in recent EMR purchase decisions and (2) vendor performance in each region based on client feedback and experience. The chart below offers a high-level view of vendors’ overall performance.

2021 was an active year for EMR purchasing despite the continued impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 150 provider organizations outside the US signed an EMR contract in 2021, covering 31 different vendors and impacting over 430 hospitals. While total decisions were lower in 2021 than in any other of the last five years, the number of beds impacted was above average thanks to a number of larger organizations making EMR purchase decisions. Europe remains the most active region, though Africa and Asia both saw increased purchase energy from 2020. The pandemic continues to hinder EMR decisions most in Oceania and Latin America (especially Spanish-speaking countries).

The PACS market in Europe is evolving. To unify care delivery, many countries are pushing for HIT consolidation across regional groups of hospitals. At the same time, healthcare organizations are increasingly looking to expand their imaging strategies outside of radiology to bring together more departments and facilities at an enterprise level. This report leverages the perspectives of 199 individuals representing 168 unique organizations across 25 European countries to determine which PACS vendors are delivering the technology and partnerships needed to drive imaging progress in Europe.

In the past few years, there has been significant merger and acquisition (M&A) activity among EMR vendors who market in Europe as well as significant purchasing activity by healthcare organizations, creating one of the world’s most dynamic EMR markets. From 2016–2020, KLAS validated over 300 EMR decisions impacting over 1,200 inpatient facilities (comprehensive data for 2021 purchases not yet available). Using this data and customer feedback from 100 organizations, this report examines the customer satisfaction, market share, and recent market energy of European EMR vendors and evaluates which are best meeting customer needs in this competitive market.

The PACS market in the Middle East and Africa is evolving, with some vendors gaining prominence and others losing traction. Healthcare organizations are looking to enhance their imaging strategies with new, advanced technology (e.g., AI and the cloud) and want vendors who innovate and deliver this technology. Using customer feedback from 60 organizations across 14 countries, this report is KLAS’ first to focus on the PACS market in the Middle East and Africa, exploring vendor market share and performance and examining which vendors are keeping pace with customer expectations.

Many healthcare organizations in the Middle East and some in Africa have made EMR purchase decisions over the last five years (2016–2020). In that time, KLAS has validated 86 EMR decisions—72 in the Middle East and 14 in Africa—impacting over 320 hospitals, with decisions made in 2018–2020 impacting (on average) at least twice as many facilities as decisions made in 2016–2017. This report will examine the customer satisfaction, market share, and recent wins and market energy of EMR vendors in the Middle East and Africa. Compared to (published in 2019), this study includes performance data on a significantly higher number of vendors, providing more expansive insights, particularly into the Middle East market.

The non-US PACS market is shifting—as cloud technology and lighter infrastructure replace aging C/S models, several traditional market mainstays are no longer viewed as cutting-edge technology. The need for traditional workstations has not disappeared, but healthcare organizations are looking for vendors that are developing imaging platforms that will meet customer needs today and in the future. Based on perspectives from 325 individuals at 272 organizations in 48 countries and territories outside the US, this report examines global as well as regional PACS performance.

KLAS’ December 2018 interoperability update validated the CommonWell-Carequality connection, which makes data sharing possible for almost any provider organization. The next hurdle is making shared data . Progress so far shows that most vendors can reconcile PAMI data, but there are big differences in how contextual data (notes and labs) is managed. Additionally, all organizations must go through a learning curve in becoming comfortable consuming outside data, so getting started early is vital.

EMR adoption has grown significantly, rapidly changing the global EMR landscape. While previous KLAS reports gave mainly aggregate, global views of EMR performance, the state of the market is now such that KLAS can also more deeply examine vendor performance by region, giving provider organizations a more valuable, accurate picture of how vendors respond to regional needs. As part of this regional emphasis, this report examines how confident customers are in their vendor’s overall R&D efforts, in their dedication to healthcare in various regions, and in their ability to strategically partner with organizations to help drive deeper EMR adoption.

NHS England’s Five-Year Forward View and the National Information Board’s response have thrust interoperable systems into the national spotlight in England, including the development of a Local Health and Care Record Exemplar programme. This report represents KLAS’ first look at interoperability within the NHS. The report examines how well organisations (i.e., primary, secondary, mental health, community, and social care organisations) are able to receive outside patient data, and it will serve as a baseline for future research. What types of electronic data sharing are taking place today, how frequently, and with what benefit? What technologies are relied on most? How are suppliers perceived by customers relative to the suppliers’ role in facilitating interoperability?
