Which Solutions are Considered for the Future?

HIM efficiency is at the forefront of providers’ minds, with many consolidating processes into fewer vendors’ systems, streamlining technology, and incorporating core vendor solutions when available. For this report, KLAS focused on speaking with HIM directors from organizations with 200+ beds to understand which HIM solutions are currently being used and considered for the near future.

CAC & CDI

3M HOLDS SIZABLE MINDSHARE FOR BOTH

Many providers are looking for a single-source solution for CAC and CDI, and 3M is the only vendor with a substantial number of installs for both. Optum has a significant number of CAC clients, many of which are also choosing Optum’s newer CDI solution rather than more mature alternatives. 3M similarly benefits from current CDI customers choosing 3M CAC, and vice versa. Nuance consistently demonstrates strong CDI performance but doesn’t have a broad CAC base yet. Thus far, no vendors have demonstrated broad customer success with both solutions.

FRONT-END SPEECH & TRANSCRIPTION

NUANCE LEADS IN CUSTOMER FES CONVERSIONS

Almost half of Nuance’s customers plan to transition some of their transcription to front-end speech (FES). Of these, almost all report considering only Nuance’s FES solution. Lacking Nuance’s broad reputation for speech products, MModal receives less consideration from their own transcription clients. Half of MModal clients are considering Nuance over MModal for front-end speech despite comparable performance reported by customers.

OUTSOURCED CODING

HIMAGINE LEADING IN A LEADERLESS MARKET

Of the 25 coding firms mentioned in this study, only himagine (Kforce) has a marginal lead in market share. Nearly half (47%) of providers in this study are not outsourcing inpatient coding, and while 20% plan to purchase or expand, many are waiting to see what impact CAC technology will have before they invest in coding services. Several providers have found success with offshore coding, but the majority (69%) would not consider it despite the potential cost savings, citing concerns with security, training, and accuracy.

DOCUMENT MANAGEMENT & IMAGING

TWO DIRECTIONS: CORE VENDORS, ENTERPRISE DOCUMENT MANAGEMENT

Hyland has the most mentions, with 75% of their clients expanding, maintaining, or purchasing document management imaging (DMI). Cerner and McKesson are the next most mentioned, as providers are increasingly using existing core vendors to automate document types and reduce their use of scanning/paper. Some newer Epic customers also mentioned that they are waiting to see what their EMR can offer before engaging a third-party vendor. An increasing number of organizations are purchasing or expanding their existing DMI functionality in order to combine clinical and nonclinical document management.
