Better Tools + More Data = Less Infection?
For the past several years, both government and private initiatives—from meaningful use (MU) to health information exchanges (HIEs) to accountable care organizations (ACOs)—have focused on two overriding goals: improving care and increasing efficiency. The more the healthcare industry has honed in on these two objectives, the more vital electronic infection surveillance systems have become. Recent actions by CMS, including its refusal to pay for treatment associated with hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) and more extensive reporting requirements, have only increased providers’ desire for an accurate and efficient way to monitor infections.
